On behalf of the Sanitary District of Decatur, Illinois, Clark Dietz is pleased to accept the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Central Illinois Section’s Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement (OCEA) Award for the Lakeshore Drive Lift Station Replacement Project.
The goal of the project was to design cost effective improvements to replace the aging infrastructure (originally installed in the early 1950’s) including pumps, piping, valves, structural upgrades, electrical and controls improvements, mechanical equipment, backup power generation, site improvements, and other ancillary improvements. The construction reused the existing wet well, but the modifications required significant bypass pumping during construction. All electrical and controls systems were replaced as was the above-grade structure. A new 600 amp, 480 volt electrical service powers the new station’s three submersible pumps, with an indoor 300 kW diesel generator providing back-up power.
Engineering Quality of Life
The upgraded infrastructure provides reliable wastewater pumping for the Sanitary District of Decatur serving the community and industries that rely on the operation of the station. In addition to being located adjacent to Lake Decatur, the Station is also adjacent to a walking path along the lake. The building improvements and security enhancements provide better aesthetics to the community, as well as reducing the likelihood of future environmental issues due to aging infrastructure.
